Mathew Zucker, rare book specialist and dealer, has compiled writings by PHD scholars Maggie Rosenau, Allison Rudnick, and a texts by curators Andre Kamber and Dieter Schwarz in consideration of the complexity of Dieter Roth’s artistic production from 1957-69, “…a time rich with an overflow of unprecedented ideas”. The study highlights a unique collection of 12 of the artist’s innovative hand-cut books assembled over many years. The Poetry book series shown here attest to the close relationship Dieter Roth had with Rudolf Rieser, who helped finance, build and promote his pieces during this especially productive period of Roth’s prolific career. Printed in full-color and realized in a playful tabloid format, this is a beautifully produced homage to one the leading figures in the field of contemporary artists’ books. This volume also has unique artworks not seen in any printed catalogue to supplement the books being described.

Edition of 2,000 copies

Published by Zucker Art Books, 2016

Paperback newsprint folded with 37 pages and 51 photographs

12x18 Inches

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0611/4194/2439/products/ScreenShot2022-09-12at11.24.23AM.png?v=1664285561
dirk-dobke-dieter-roth-inprint-artists-books-2006
Dirk Dobke: Dieter Roth InPrint. Artists' Books - 2006

Unique Editions collects a group of key artist's books and editions by the German-born, sometimes-Swiss, sometimes-Icelandic cult artist, Dieter Roth (1930 -1998). All of the books, graphic and multiple editions gathered here are one-of-a-kind works of art, for Roth eschewed traditional artistic procedures. (He regularly made use of non-art mediums such as chocolate, cheese, sausage and banana to create unique, fugitive works.) What distinguishes this publication is that at least two examples of each edition are shown together, demonstrating Roth's exploration of difference within structures of sameness. The majority of the works collected here were made by the artist in his studio, and they clarify the ways in which his hands-on, do-it-yourself approach challenged conventional genres. Roth influenced many artists over the last four decades of his life, inlcuding Martin Kippenberger and Jason Rhoades. These books and editions are arguably his most significant contributions to art history.

Published By Zucker Art Books

Year of publication 2006

200 Pages, 23x20cm

Paperback Cover
