Roth created the designs in many different ways, yielding a wide range of variations. The yellow and black sheet shown here is composed from solid strips of tape in varying widths. The papers were printed in two colors by photolithography from zinc plates on heavy paper, and most were used by binders for covers and endpapers.

Here is an unedited account on how these paper were made from an Interview with Icelandic printer Rafn Hafnfjord and Adalsteinn Ingolfsson on June 15,1982

“He designed special paper for book covers, which we printed in great quantities. This wasn't very popular with our customers so we ended up with most of this paper ourselves. But many years later, I saw a similar kind of paper or exactly the same kind, being used by other printing shops,- which had clearly filched our ideas. Diter then made a couple of sample-books with these different covers in them. They are extremely beautiful in their way, and now collectors of Diters work have been trying to buy the only two copies off me, - to no avail.

Again he hit upon new short cuts to the target. Making these different kind of samples could have been costly. Each sample would usually have been photographed separately. Diter bypassed the film process altogether by working directly on a glass plate, which then was laid on top of a light-sensitive printing plate (zinc-sheet) which was illuminated in a vacuum frame. For each pattern or sample Diter really used only one glass plate, - he would put pieces of tape over it, turn the plate this way and that for each shot, then add more tape to it, make different patterns on the plate.

For another and very different patterns he would pour black ink or ink-based liquid onto the glass plate, maybe onto the tape he had stuck to the glass before,- or he would take a stick and draw with it, by whirling it round in the ink which would congeal on the glass. All sorts of variations could be effected, by turning the glass different ways along with the paper, overlaying contrasting patterns etc. Or Diter would simply flick ink onto the glass, creating a sort of abstract-expressionist effects. His ingenuity seemed limitless.”

Matthew Zucker owns a group of those papers mentioned above in a sample book made by Dieter Roth and some full size loose sheets, both acquired from the collection of Rafn Hafnfjord. Black and grey papers were used to cover boards to bind a set of newspapers from Iceland in the early 60’s.
